Vorotishin Cross in Kameno: a silent witness of antiquity
A few dozen kilometers from Minsk, in the quiet village of Kameno, one of the most mysterious and little-known monuments of ancient Russian epigraphy is hidden. Locals simply call it the "stone", but for historians and local historians it is the "Boris Stone" or "Vorotishin cross" - a unique artifact of the 12th century associated with the name of the legendary Polotsk Prince Boris Vseslavovich.
Externally, the block most resembles a giant bell or a huge boulder of unusual shape. Its height, which is visible above the earth's surface, is about three meters, however, according to the researchers, this is only the tip of the iceberg. The main part of the monolith goes deep into the ground, which raises many questions: whether the stone "grew" here for centuries, rising from the depths, or, on the contrary, slowly sinks into the soft soil, taking with it the secrets of bygone eras.
The main value of the Voroshin Cross is not in its size, but in the inscriptions and symbols carved on its granite surface. As on other Boris stones, a deep four-pointed cross is clearly visible here - the main symbol of Christianity, which came to these lands in the X–XI centuries. An ancient craftsman carved a Cyrillic inscription next to the cross. The text is addressed to God and contains a request for help - such prayer messages were typical for that time.
It is believed that the installation of such stones was initiated by Polotsk Prince Boris Vseslavovich, who ruled at the beginning of the XII century. According to one version, the stones served as a kind of "pagan obelisks", which the prince rededicated to the Christian faith, fighting ancient cults. On the other hand, they marked the boundaries of possessions, trade routes, or were monuments offering prayers to heaven for the health of the princely family. In any case, today the Voroshin Cross is an important religious and historical artifact.
The peculiarity of the stone in Kameno lies in its inscription. According to the researchers' transcripts, the word "Vorotishin" indicates the name of a person, perhaps Vorotish (or Vorotislav), to whom or on whose instructions this monument could have been dedicated. This makes it not just a princely sign, but perhaps a memorial or boundary sign of a particular person, which is less common than standard princely stones.
For a long time, the stone was under threat of extinction. In Soviet times, many similar boulders were split into building materials for the foundations of houses and roads. Voroshin's cross was lucky to survive. Perhaps its massiveness and the fact that most of the block is hidden underground played a role - this made it difficult to crack it. Today, the monument stands surrounded by private buildings and requires careful treatment.
When looking at the "Vorotishin Cross", an ambivalent feeling comes over. On the one hand, it is the power of nature contained in granite. On the other hand, the fragility of history, because the inscriptions of the XII century are subject to erosion, and if they are not preserved, they may disappear forever. The village of Kameno lives its own life, and the ancient stone continues to keep its silent watch, reminding us that history is not always written in chronicles - sometimes it is carved in stone.
