A stone cross in Kamai.
On the square in front of the St. John the Baptist Church in Kamai there is a stone cross, which dates back to the 15th and 17th centuries. The exact time of its installation is unknown. Some researchers believe that the cross appeared shortly before or simultaneously with the construction of the church.
This cross is carved from a monolithic pink granite boulder. Its dimensions are: height — 2.5 meters, width along the horizontal cross—section - 1.88 meters, thickness — 0.6 meters.
The vertical part of the cross has a four-sided shape, and in the crosshair there is a triangular niche for the crucifixion, which faces downwards. The letters and numbers "R 1803" have been preserved above this niche, which may indicate the date or initials associated with the cross.
On the back and partially facade surface of the cross there are heavily damaged and still undeciphered Latin inscriptions, which are arranged in four rows and belong to a later origin. These inscriptions remain a mystery to researchers and draw attention to this historical monument.
There are three main versions of the origin of the cross. According to the "Code of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Belarus", the cross dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries. "Memory. The Postavy district" claims that the cross was erected at the same time as the church. Local historians believe that the cross was erected in 1803 in honor of the 200th anniversary of the church.
