Description

In the Uzda district, near the village of Krasnoe, one of the main rivers of Belarus, the Neman, originates. The source site is marked with a memorial stone with a plaque, and the picturesque reserve "Sources of the Neman River" stretches around. Since 2003, this territory has been protected by the state. Here, at the confluence of two streams, the great river begins its journey to the Baltic Sea.

The reserve is a real paradise for nature lovers. The area of almost a thousand hectares is home to rare species of birds listed in the Red Book, including the meadow skate and black grouse, and wild garlic can be found in the forests. Journey to the Source: where the great Neman begins

There is an amazing place in Belarus, from where the majestic Neman, sung in poetry and legends, begins its long journey to the Baltic Sea. You can find it in the Uzda district, near the village of Krasnoe. This point on the map has a special energy and has a sacred meaning for the two peoples - Belarusians and Lithuanians.

The source of the Neman River is not just a geographical feature, but a true symbol of unity and memory. The coordinates of this place are 53.4700, 27.3658 (although official sources may indicate similar values, for example, 53.481727, 27.341592 for the territory of the reserve).

Two rivers, one legend.

Interestingly, the great river does not originate from one stream. It is generally believed that the Neman River is born from the confluence of two small rivers - the Nemanets and the Losha. It happens near the village of Verkhneman. At first, it is a modest, almost imperceptible stream, only to turn many kilometers later into a full-flowing artery with a length of 937 km, along which the border of three states runs: Belarus, Lithuania and Russia.

The "Sources of the Neman River" nature Reserve.

The source site itself and the territories adjacent to it are under special protection. In 2003 (according to other sources - officially in 2008), a local nature reserve "Sources of the Neman River" was established here. This decision was made to preserve the unique natural landscapes typical of central Belarus, as well as rare species of plants and animals.

The area of the reserve is impressive - more than 900 hectares. Here you can see a variety of types of forests: from shady and damp to light forests. The flora of the reserve includes more than 500 species of higher vascular plants, which indicates its great natural value. Of particular pride are two places where a rare red book species grows - the bear onion, better known as wild garlic.

The earth sings here: the birds of the reserve.

However, the main treasure of the reserve is its feathered inhabitants. The variety of landscapes creates ideal conditions for a variety of bird species. Scientists have discovered species listed in the Red Book of Belarus here, for example, the lesser spotted eagle.

But the most amazing thing is the number of birds with international protected status. 15 species of birds of the European Protected Status (SPEC) are registered on the territory of the reserve. Among them there are those who are under threat of global extinction, for example, the meadow horse, as well as the common mulan, meadow chased, snipe, grouse, field lark and many others.

To hear them singing in the early morning in the vicinity of the source is a real miracle that will be remembered for a lifetime. If you close your eyes, you can imagine how these birds will set off on a long journey along the same route as the waters of the Neman - to the Baltic Sea, where the river meets salty waves in its picturesque delta.

A memorial sign.

Today, the source of the Neman River is marked by a modest but very symbolic stone with a commemorative plaque. She reminds every traveler who has entered this picturesque area that it is here, among the quiet fields and forests of the Uzda lands, that one of the main waterways of Europe originates.

It is not difficult to get here, but to see with your own eyes how the big river begins is an experience worth experiencing for anyone who is interested in the history, nature and cultural heritage of Belarus.
