Grodno. Zoo

The history of the zoo in Grodno dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. In 1926, on the initiative of the teacher of the local gymnasium, Jan Kakhanouski, a botanical garden was established near the gymnasium, where the gymnasium students made flowerbeds and beds with plants. And in the 1927-1928 academic year, 2 new departments were opened to deepen the knowledge of high school students in zoology. Later, this institution was called a zoological garden, and by 1936 the zoo had several hundred animals, including a bison and a lion. After the reunification of Belarus in 1939, the zoo was recognized as a state zoo and financed from the state budget. During the war, the zoo suffered a lot, but was rebuilt. Today, the zoo has an area of more than five hectares. By 2008, a number of new modern premises for animals were erected: a hoof house, a bear house and others. The zoo has a terrarium and an aquarium where you can see a large collection of fish, snakes and turtles. The schedule of the zoo can be found on the institution's website.
