Description

In Grodno, at the intersection of Sovetskaya Street and Dominikanskaya Street, there is a building of the former Dominican monastery of the 18th century. At various times, the building housed a Dominican school, a girls' gymnasium, a police department, a prison, a barracks, a city council and a magistrate.

During the Soviet period, newspaper editorial offices, the office of the regional party Committee, the House of Folk Art, and the State Song and Dance Ensemble under the leadership of the outstanding composer and conductor Grigory Shirma worked. The regional puppet theater was operating. Then the Officers' House.

Currently, the building houses the department of advanced training and retraining of personnel of cultural and art institutions.

Grodno. The Magistrate's building.

In the city of Grodno, at the intersection of Sovetskaya pedestrian street with Dominikanskaya Street (at Sovetskaya, 8) is the building of the former Dominican monastery. The building is stone, two-storied. It has the status of historical and cultural value.


The building originally belonged to a Catholic monastery and was erected in the 18th century during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The construction of this house was completed in 1789, and the Dominican School was located here.

During the Russian Empire, the Grodno District School operated until 1932, and the building belonged to the Dominican monastery. Later, the boarding school of the Grodno Women's Gymnasium was located here. Until 1894, the premises were occupied by the Mariinsky Girls' Gymnasium.


After that, from 1894 to 1915, the Grodno City administration and the city police Department were located. In 1910, there was also a prison here.

In 1911, Police Chief Ivan Frimerman lived in the building.

During the First World War, an army barracks was located during the German occupation.

Since 1919, with the advent of the Polish government, the premises have been occupied by the city magistrate until the arrival of Soviet power in 1939.

After the annexation to Soviet Belarus in 1939, the building was occupied by the Grodno City Executive Committee.


After the Great Patriotic War, the editorial office of the newspaper Hrodnenskaya Pravda, the railway newspaper Zapadnaya Magistral, and the army newspaper Krasnoe Znamya operated. 

The party cabinet of the regional party committee since 1948. Since 1949, the House of Folk Art has been the State Song and Dance Ensemble under the direction of the outstanding composer and conductor Grigory Shirma. The regional puppet theater was operating. Since 1953, the House of Officers.


Currently, the building houses the department of advanced training and retraining of personnel of cultural and art institutions. A memorial plaque to the composer and poet A. Shidlovsky is installed on the facade.
