Grodno. Monument to Marshal Vasily Sokolovsky.
In Grodno, on Sovetskaya pedestrian street between buildings No. 6 and No. 10 in a small park, there is a monument to Marshal of the Soviet Union Vasily Danilovich Sokolovsky (1897-1968). V. Sokolovsky was born in Grodno province, Hero of the Soviet Union.
The monument was erected in 1973. The architect is V. Aladov, and the sculptor is G. Muromtsev. The monument is made of granite and bronze. The height of the pedestal is 3.7 meters, and the bust is 1.5 meters.
There was a monument to Stalin at this place until the 1960s. Then the monument was removed. And according to one version, they just dug a hole nearby and buried the plaster monument. And for several years there was just a small park on this place.
And earlier, before the square and before the monument, there was a Catholic Dominican Church here. The church was demolished, but its foundations have been preserved, and the church can be rebuilt in the future. The church was made of stone, consecrated in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ruzhentsova, built in the 17th century with the money of the Sapieha magnates. The main facade of the church was double-towered. The interior had 11 altars with icons and portraits of the founders of the shrine. There were many church items, including silver ones: over 200 candlesticks, lamps and candelabra, which were made of glass, ceramics and metal. There was also a crypt.
During the time of the Russian Empire, in 1840, the Dominican monastery at the church was closed, and the building was transferred to a men's gymnasium. And the church was adapted for a gymnasium church. At the end of the 19th century, the church was dismantled.
