Description

In 1634, the Grand Marshal of Lithuania Krzysztof Veselovsky and his wife Aleksandra Sobieska founded the St. Bridget Convent on the outskirts of what was then Grodno. The convent complex consists of a church, a monastery, a wooden lyamus (a two-story outbuilding) and a high stone fence with gates and octagonal corner towers. It occupies an entire block in the historical center of Grodno. When you walk along it, it’s as if you’ve traveled back in time.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1642-51. This Baroque architectural monument (with Gothic and Renaissance elements) is well preserved and makes a strong impression.

In the 19th century, the Russian authorities used the premises of the St. Bridget Convent as a prison. It operated in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1950 it was closed, the buildings were used as a psychiatric hospital. In the 1970-80s, restoration work was carried out. In 1990, the complex was returned to the Catholic Church, the church was consecrated in 1992.

Grodno. Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Bridget Monastery in Grodno was founded on November 25, 1634 by the Marshal of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Krzysztof Veselovsky and his wife Aleksandra Sobieska to perpetuate the memory of their early deceased daughter Griselda. In 1634, the Veselovsky couple invited the Bridget Order to Grodno and presented it with several plots of land in the city itself and farmsteads in the Grodno and Volkovysk districts. Thanks to Veselovsky's support, in 1636, first a wooden church was erected, and then in 1642 a stone church building designed by the Italian architect Benedetto Moli.

By the end of the 18th century, the complex included a stone church, a residential building, a fence with gates, outbuildings, a vegetable garden, and a garden. A bell tower stood separately and existed until the early 1960s. On all sides, the monastery was fenced off from the city streets by blank walls about five meters high, with square towers at the corners, and two entrance gates (gates).

The dominant feature of the monastery is the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. The church is a single-nave, two-towered temple with a semicircular apse. Its western façade is divided into clusters of Corinthian pilasters and decorated with a developed attic, pediment, two decorative turrets, volutes, etc. A very interesting element is the frieze around the entire building, decorated with a strip of decorative painting. The architectural details show a significant deviation from the canons of classical forms, a unique interpretation of individual elements, only vaguely reminiscent of the forms of Western European Baroque.

The original interior of the church has not survived to this day. The church had 7 altars and also housed the relics of St. Clement, who was a Roman soldier and died during the persecution of Christians in the 4th century. His relics were brought to the city in 1781 by the Grodno mayor Karl Khreptovich. The relics were given by Pope Clement XIII in response to a request to appoint a patron for Grodno and its citizens.

The Church and Monastery of the Bridgetines is a valuable monument of early Baroque architecture with elements of Gothic and Renaissance.

A unique building, a lyamus (outbuilding), has been preserved in the courtyard of the Brigitte Monastery. This is the oldest wooden building in Belarus, built in the 1630s and 1640s. It was built without a single nail. All structural elements were connected using wooden wedges. This is a two-story house built from massive beams on notches with arched galleries on the main facade. The main facade of the building is decorated with a two-tier gallery with a balustrade on the second floor. The traditions of Belarusian folk construction are reflected in the architecture and structures of the building. The monastery's warehouse was located on the first floor of the building, and the second floor served as a dormitory for the Brigitte nuns.
