Grodno. Romer's house.
In Grodno, on Sovetskaya pedestrian street (house number 23), there is an architectural monument known as the Romer House. At first, Severin and Theodora Romer were the owners of the house.
Severin Romer served as marshal of the nobility of the Grodno district. He took part in the uprising of 1863-1864. Rebels often gathered in his mansion. He was well acquainted with the artist and composer Napoleon Orda, who visited Romer and painted the master's house in one of his paintings.
After the suppression of the uprising and the expulsion of Romer to the Tomsk province, the building was put up for sale, and it was acquired by Moisha and Lisa Yasinovsky. They rebuilt the house for the Peterburgsky Hotel. At the same time, there was a store selling colonial goods and Rhenish wines. At the beginning of the 20th century, the owners were Judel and Raube Riemann. They rebuilt the building and expanded the hotel's premises to 33 rooms.
During the revolutionary events in the spring of 1919, the Belarusian National Committee and the Belarusian county Council, the Central Belarusian Council of the Grodno region, as well as the Belarusian House club, Belarusian language courses, the Editorial Office of the newspaper "Belarus" and the community of Belarusian youth worked in this house. During the period of the Polish state, the editorial office of the newspaper "New Diary of Kresovy" worked in Polish.
During the Nazi occupation, the building housed the Main Customs Office of the occupation authorities.
After the war, the dormitory of the pedagogical institute was located here, and the future famous writer Alexey Karpyuk (1920-1992) lived as a student.
Then the city executive committee of Grodno worked here.
In 1961, the 'Pelmennaya' cafe opened in the basement, and then the 'Semafor' bistro restaurant began operating in this room.
Since 1982, he has been a regional organization of book lovers.
The building now houses the Grodno Regional Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, and the 'Semaphore' restaurant.
