Grodno. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin and the monastery.

In the historical center of Grodno, right next to the castle, there is an Orthodox church and a monastery. The church was consecrated in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin. There is a residential monastery and an economic building near the church.

The church was originally built as a Uniate church during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Earlier, an Orthodox Prechistenskaya Church in the style of the Grodno School of Architecture was built on this site in the 12th century.

The Basilian Monastery was founded in 1632 on the initiative of the Uniate Metropolitan Anthony Selyava. The first abbess Basilia Sapega. In 1641, the monastery had only five nuns. After the fire of 1647, which destroyed the old church, a new Church of the Nativity of the Virgin was built. The temple burned down in 1720.

In 1720– the construction of a stone church and monastery began under the direction of architect Joseph Fontana III (1700-1755). The funds for the construction were allocated by Uniate Metropolitan Lev Kishka. The shrine was consecrated in 1751.

In the 19th century, during the Russian Empire, the monastery was handed over to Orthodox believers. The church was rebuilt. A warm church of St. Sergius of Radonezh was built on the territory of the monastery. A utility building has been erected.

After the Great Patriotic War, the nuns moved to Zhirovichi. In 1977-1992, the Republican Museum of Atheism and the History of Religion worked in the monastery. In 1992, the church and monastery were handed over to the faithful.
