Grodno. Sovetskaya Street. The former Church of the Holy Spirit.
In Grodno, on Sovetskaya pedestrian street (house number 14), there is an architectural monument of the 18th - 19th century - the former building of the church and monastery of the Holy Spirit.
The church and the Hospital of the Holy Spirit on this site were built back in the 16th century during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania with the money of Queen Bona Sforza.
There was a shelter for the homeless and sick at the church. The church was rebuilt as a Mercy House in the early 19th century during the Russian Empire.
The church was rebuilt for the first time in 1792 at the expense of Bishop Ignatius Masalsky of Vilna. The second floor was completed. In the 19th century, the house was rebuilt several times.
After the anti-Russian uprising of 1863-1864, merchant Abel Tarlovsky acquired this building. Then he resold the house to Ion Jose. His son Shmuel rebuilt the house for the Slavyanskaya Hotel. Also, various institutions worked here at the same time: Frenkel's hairdresser, Soloveitchik's bakery, Vranson's furniture store, Tsyva Myshkovskaya's fruit store, Smazhenovich's haberdashery store, G. Baum's funeral supplies store, Markus Prensky's cloth shop and tailoring workshop. Here was the apartment of the doctor M. Khlevinsky.
During the time of the Polish state, the building belongs to three owners: Samuel Jose, Filijs Nazarko and Hoshi Frucht. There was a canteen in the premises, the hotel was expanded and modernized, the Polonia trading house, the newspaper office, Rainer's restaurant, the garrison casino, a publishing house and a bookstore, and a pastry shop.
After the war, the building housed the regional committee of the Communist Party of Belarus, then the city executive committee, the Nauka bookstore, and other institutions. There are cafes and shops here now.
