Description
The Grodno State Museum of the History of Religion was founded in Grodno on July 7, 1977 as the Republican Museum of Atheism and the History of Religion. On August 12, 2005, it received its current name.
The museum is the only museum of this profile in the Republic of Belarus. Its mission is to introduce the history and culture of the peoples living in Belarus, to cultivate respect for their religious views, and to cultivate a culture of tolerance towards representatives of different nationalities and faiths.
In 1992, the buildings in which the museum was located were transferred to the restored monastery, and the museum received a new building — a monument of civil architecture — a palace of the 18th-19th centuries.

Grodno State Museum of the History of Religion.
The Grodno State Museum of the History of Religion is the only museum in the Republic of Belarus that studies and reflects the history of religion and culture of Belarus.
It originates in Polotsk. By decree of the Ministry of Culture of the BSSR, on December 4, 1973, a decision was made to organize and create the Republican Museum of Atheism in Polotsk. The museums of the republic were tasked with creating lists of museum items on the history of religion and atheism, which were in their funds to form the collections of the Republican Museum of Atheism. On June 6, 1977, the museum was renamed the Republican Museum of Atheism and the History of Religion, and transferred to Grodno.
The buildings of the former Nativity of the Virgin Mary Convent on Novozamkovaya Street, 3 (present-day David Grodnensky Street) were allocated to accommodate the exhibits, collections and museum staff. In 1979, restoration work began in the monastery complex. After the restoration work, the museum received fifteen exhibition halls, three exhibition halls and one lecture hall. The exhibition area was more than 2,200 square meters.
The museum collection began to form in 1974. At the time of the museum's transfer from Polotsk to Grodno, it contained 1,817 storage units. As of January 1, 1990, the museum collections numbered 30,931 storage units. On September 13, 1989, the Republican Museum of Atheism and the History of Religion was renamed the Belarusian State Museum of the History of Religion. In 2005, the word "Belarusian" was replaced by "Grodno".
During 1992–1998, the building that housed the museum was returned to the recreated Orthodox Holy Nativity of the Virgin Mary Convent. In August 2005, the museum received a two-story palace, which is a monument of civil architecture of the Classicism era with elements of Baroque from the mid-18th century; in 2006, repair and restoration work began.
As of 01.01.2012, the museum's main collection consisted of 65,944 storage units, which together constituted 14 collections. Among the monuments are rarities and unique works. In addition to traditional forms of work, tours of the exposition and exhibitions, lectures, museum lessons and museum classes, the museum has developed and is implementing the Museum and Children program, a program for working with disabled children, orphans, lonely elderly people, and thematic tours and concerts of sacred and classical music.
When visiting, be sure to take a tour to immerse yourself in the history of religions and confessions in Belarus from early times for a few hours. The guides are very passionate about the subject and knowledgeable people.
