Gorodok. Castle Hill.
The town of Gorodok has a long and rich history. In this small town, quite a lot of architectural and ancient monuments have been preserved: the stone Orthodox Trinity Church, a stone watermill, a synagogue building, a civil pre-revolutionary building. There was also a wooden church of John the Baptist, who died during the war.
There is a Castle Hill, or hillfort, in the center of the town. Locals simply call this place the Castle.
The castle hill has the status of an archaeological monument of national importance. It is located in the northern part of the town. It is an oval-shaped fortified detinets (central part of the town) 60 by 40 meters, which is surrounded from the south by a water moat 20-30 meters wide. And from the north it is surrounded by a powerful Earthen rampart, whose height reaches ten meters.
There was a defensive tower in the castle, located on the east side of which there was a round platform with a diameter of seven meters. The tower was at the entrance to the castle. A wooden bridge was thrown over the moat near the tower. Wooden and stone buildings were built on the fortified Detinets.
During the archaeological excavations, ceramics from the 14th – 18th centuries were found. Among the finds there is a glazed stove tile with a floral ornament and an image of an eagle. The materials of the finds are located in Molodechno in the Museum of local Lore. The castle was explored by famous Belarusian archaeologists Mikhail Tkachev and Yaroslav Zverugo.
