Gorodok. The Regional Museum of Local Lore.
Gorodok is a small town in the north of the Vitebsk region. The town has been known since the 16th century. It had a bastion castle. To popularize knowledge about the history of the region, in 1974 a decree was adopted on the opening of the Museum of local lore, which began operating in 1976 in the building of the former children's library.
Since 1996, the institution has received a new building, and since 2004 it has been called the Gorodok Regional Museum of Local Lore. The exposition occupies an exhibition area of more than 200 square meters.
The town is known for its literary traditions. Konstantin Verenitsyn (1834-1903), the author of the poem “Taras on Parnassus”, hails from these places. Verenitsyn was born in the village of Ostrovlyane in the Gorodok district and graduated from the parish school in Gorodok. The museum has an exposition telling about the writers of the Gorodok region. A literary and artistic composition “Konstantin Verenitsyn and his poem “Taras on Parnassus” was created near the museum.
The museum has departments of ethnography and folk crafts, a department of nature, which tells about minerals and the water system, flora and fauna of the region. The museum has 26 thousand artifacts of the main fund, from which collections of photographs and documents, awards and weapons, a collection of graphics and paintings are formed. There is also an archaeological collection, which tells about the most ancient period of Gorodok and the district.
