Gorodok. A memorial sign on the site of the ghetto.
The town of Gorodok in the Molodechno district was a predominantly Jewish town before the Great Patriotic War. During the war, the Nazi invaders organized a ghetto and in the spring of 1942, all its inhabitants were destroyed.
In the early days of the war in June 1941, Nazi troops occupied the town of Gorodok. Before the start of the war, about 1,000 Jews lived here. First of all, the Jews were ordered to hand over good clothes and valuables.
The Jews were ordered to move to the ghetto, which was located in the center of the town and occupied a place from the stone synagogue to the turnoff to the village of Pozharishche – this is about 500 by 100 meters in area. There were about 20 buildings in the ghetto, along with a synagogue. The entire area was fenced with barbed wire, and the entrance was near the synagogue. Able-bodied people were used for heavy physical labor on road repairs and logging. In May 1942, some of those who arose were transported to a labor camp in Krasnoe.
On July 11, 1942, all Jews were ordered to gather in a park between 2 synagogues, where men were separated from women and old people with children. They were put into trucks and taken away towards the village of Vydrich. Then they were taken out of the cars and driven into a barn, where they were shot. After that, the building was set on fire. During this criminal execution, about 900 Jews from the town and nearby villages were killed.
There are 2 monuments in the town in memory of the dead. There is one monument near the former synagogue on the site where the ghetto was located. And the second one occurred at the scene of a mass shooting.
