Gorodishche. Monument of archeology.

In the Baranovichi district there is a place called Gorodishche, which has several monuments of architecture and antiquity. If you drive from Baranovichi to Novogrudok through the Settlement along the bypass road, you will see a huge mound on the left side-this is an archaeological monument.

 There are several hypotheses that there could have been here before, and one of the most interesting and intriguing is that Varuta, the residence of King Mindovga, was here!

For the first time such a hypothesis was expressed back in the 19th century by famous Belarusian historians Theodor Narbut and Alexander Yelsky. The discoverer of the monument is considered to be V. Astapov, who explored the settlement in 1951. Frida Gurevich and Alexey Mitrofanov also studied in the 1950s. In 1964, the archaeologist Leonid Pobol and in 1970 Mikhail Chernyavsky.  The cultural layer reaches 0.6 meters. Artifacts of the culture of bar ceramics from the period of the II-III centuries were found: bar ceramics, slag, iron products. Bronze jewelry.

The monument is located 800 meters west of the town. It has an oval shape and a size of 50 by 28 meters. It is oriented from south to north. The entrance to the monument is from the north side. The largest fortifications were from the east, and here the site rises 7 meters. Artificial terraces have been created on the slopes. There is a defensive moat 6-7 meters wide and about two meters deep.
