Description

One of the central squares and streets in the city of Gorki is named after the commander – countryman Ivan Ignatievich Yakubovsky (1912-1976). There is a monument to the outstanding commander on the square.

I.I. Yakubovsky - Marshal of the USSR, twice Hero of the Soviet Union. I. Yakubovsky was born in the Goretsky district in the village of Zaitsevo. When he became a marshal and a famous figure, he visited his small homeland – Goretsky district more than once.

Gorki. Monument to Marshal I. Yakubovsky.

The city of Gorki in the Mogilev region has quite a lot of its outstanding countrymen and Marshal of the Soviet Union Ivan Ignatievich Yakubovsky rightfully considered one of them. In honor of the famous commander, one of the main streets in the center of Gorki is named and a square is named. There is a monument to a famous figure on the square.

I.I. Yakubovsky (1912 – 1976) – Marshal of the Soviet Union, twice Hero of the Soviet Union. He was born in the village of Zaitsevo in the Goretsky district in a peasant family. He graduated from a village school, and then worked at a factory in Gorki. He studied at the pedagogical college in Orsha. He was a member of the Communist Party. Since 1932, he has been in the ranks of the Red Army. He studied at the M. Kalinin Military School in Minsk. He graduated from armored courses in Leningrad. He served in the Belarusian Military District. He took part in the Polish campaign in 1939 and in the Soviet-Finnish war. He fought during the Great Patriotic War. He was wounded several times.

After the war, he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff. In 1960, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the group of Soviet troops in Germany. Since 1967, he has been the First Deputy Minister of Defense of the USSR and at the same time Commander-in-Chief of the Joint Armed Forces of the Warsaw Pact states.

He was elected a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He died in November 1976 and was buried in Moscow near the Kremlin Wall.
