Gomel. Festival Park.
In the western part of Gomel there is an extensive park, known as the "Festival". This park was created in honor of the jubilee anniversary of the victory over Nazism and serves as an important place of remembrance and recreation for citizens and visitors of the city.
Once there were even more trees on this place, because the current Festival Park is only a part of the once great Nazarov Forest, destroyed by the invaders during the war. On February 22, 1943, the Germans shot about 200 workers of the Gomel steam locomotive repair plant in the Nazarovsky forest. In memory of the victims, a monument was erected on the mass grave of underground workers in 1964.
The park is a single array, which is divided into two parts: the western — memorial, covering an area of about 7 hectares, and the eastern — sports. The center of the park's composition is the Mound of Glory, to which an alley decorated with hedges and flower beds leads from Rechitsky Avenue. Planting new trees such as Simon's poplar, wavy willow and mountain ash, as well as small ponds, give the park a picturesque appearance.
The recreational area of the park is equipped with original benches, installed in cozy and romantic corners, creating an atmosphere for a pleasant and relaxing stay. There are many interesting places to find in the Festival Park. There is a miniature replica of the Eiffel Tower, which adds a European flavor to the park. For outdoor enthusiasts, there is a rope town in the park, where everyone can test their strength and dexterity.
The park also has a pond and a dance floor. The church of St. Michael the Archangel is located in the park, which adds to its special spiritual significance.
Another significant attraction is the monument to the Su-24 bomber. This monument is a decommissioned Su-24 military aircraft made of light metal and mounted on a pedestal at an angle of 45 degrees to ground level. The tail section of the aircraft faces the main building of the Gomel State Technical University named after P. O. Sukhoi.
The pedestal consists of four dark-colored stone slabs arranged on top of each other, stylized as steps. The alley in front of the pedestal is decorated in the form of an airfield runway, which gives the monument a special atmosphere and emphasizes its uniqueness.
