Gomel. Youth Theater
Gomel City Youth Theater opened on October 13, 1992, coinciding with the birthday of its founder, Grigory Figlin. Grigory Figlin, a Gomel-born Moscow businessman and philanthropist, financed the construction of a theater for his hometown. The theater was the first private theater in Belarus and was named the Independent Theater. On the opening day, a performance based on Stanislav Stratiev's play "Travelers in the Night" took place.
In the late 1990s, the theater faced financial difficulties that threatened its closure. Chairman of the Gomel City Executive Committee, Alexander Serafimovich Yakobson, at the request of the theater's artists, took him under his care and provided budgetary funding. Since 1999, the theater has been called the Gomel City Youth Studio Theater.
In 2007-2010, Viktor Chepelev, Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus, was appointed Director and artistic director. Under his leadership, the theater produced a number of productions that attracted audiences of different generations and views: "Mad Money" by Alexander Ostrovsky, "I'm Standing at a restaurant: getting Married is Late, dying is Early" by Edward Radzinsky, "No. 13" by Ray Cooney, "Dinner with a Fool" by Francis Weber and others.
Since 2008, the theater has been called the Gomel City Youth Theater. In the same year, the collective was recognized as the winner in the nomination "The Best theatrical and entertainment institution" and entered on the Honor Board of the Gomel region. In 2009, the theater was recognized as the best cultural institution in Gomel and received a commemorative badge.
