The Commune House is an architectural monument of the Soviet era.

The brick building has the shape of an elongated letter "U" and occupies an entire block. Architectural expressiveness is achieved by combining 7-storey vertical sections framing a central 6-storey space with side wings.

The facades are evenly divided by risalites and recessed loggias. The central risalites have a stepped completion. The corners of the building are raised and deepened. The rhythm of the window openings, the alternation of loggias and balconies create plastic facades devoid of decorative elements.

The house was built in 1929-1931 according to the project of Stanislav Shabunevsky and engineer Grigory Khanin as housing for workers of the wagon repair plant. Similar residential complexes with facilities for public services appeared in many cities in those years. In Belarus, an analog was built in Bobruisk. However, the designed service system did not take into account the needs of residents, and not everything was implemented. The rooms were combined into apartments. On the ground floor there was a lobby, a canteen, a kindergarten, clubs and a library. The Paris Commune House was the tallest and largest building in pre-war Gomel. It was also the first building in Gomel equipped with an elevator.

After damage during the Great Patriotic War, during the restoration of the building, its layout was preserved, but the parapet was removed. As a result of the renovations, the commune house became a corridor-type dormitory, and the first floor was occupied by shops.

After the reconstruction in 1986, the building became a high-comfort residential building.

Currently, the apartments in this building are considered elite housing in Gomel. The apartments have high ceilings and modern layouts. There are two-storey apartments. There is a bank, clothing and shoe stores, and a pharmacy on the ground floor of the commune house.

The novel “The House of the Commune” by Homel writer and playwright Vasily Tkachev is dedicated to the House-commune and the fate of its inhabitants.
