The house of the former Zemstvo council in Gomel is an example of Art Nouveau architecture and an important monument of the country's cultural heritage.
The main facade of the building of the former Zemstvo council house is asymmetrical and divided into four parts, varying in size and completed with various attics. Rectangular windows in each of these parts have different sizes, which gives the facade dynamism and uniqueness. The facades are decorated with pilasters, arched and semicircular niches, as well as rustication, which emphasizes the richness of the architectural design. The color scheme of the facades is based on a contrasting combination of red and gray plaster, which makes the building particularly expressive.
The interior space is organized in such a way that an elongated vestibule and staircase block separates the corner volume with a hall on the second floor from the wing with a corridor layout. Adjacent to this wing is a volume with an independent entrance and stairs, which provides easy access.
After the October 1917 events, the Palace of Labor was housed in the building and it continued to perform important public functions.
During the Great Patriotic War, the building was hardly damaged, but the internal wooden parts and window frames were destroyed in a fire. After the war, the building was completely renovated and the services of the district executive committee were housed in it.
In 1980, the district library occupied the first floor, and the extracurricular activities center and a pioneer organization were located on the second floor. These institutions continue to operate in the building to this day.
On the eve of the Belarusian Writing Day in 2016, restoration work was carried out on the building, which made it possible to preserve the architectural heritage for future generations.
The house of the former Zemstvo council is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus, which underlines its importance and uniqueness in the cultural context of the country.
