Gomel. The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.
The Volotova Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built at the expense and by order of Count Rumyantsev in 1817. Until that time, there was an old wooden church on this site, which had fallen into disrepair. The talented architect John Clark was invited from England to build the new church, and the local icon painter Sazonov was sent to study art abroad at the Academy of Fine Arts to paint the main altar.
A few years after the construction of the temple, due to complaints from the priests, it was decided to carry out repairs. During these works, the wooden floor was replaced with a brick one and other types of repairs were carried out.
The church remained closed for almost the entire 19th century, as the local peasants, who were practically the only permanent parishioners, were relocated to another village. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that the building was restored and re-consecrated. The temple was a structure with a symmetrical longitudinal-axial composition, with a square-shaped main volume, an adjacent rectangular apse on one side and a bell tower on the other side. The temple has preserved this architectural appearance to the present day.
The talented architect Komburov was engaged in the repair and restoration of the temple. However, during the Soviet era, the church was closed and no one took care of it for a long time, which led to significant dilapidation and destruction of the building.
It was only in 1999 that the organization "Projectrestoration" assumed responsibility for the restoration of the ancient temple. Restoration work continued for almost six years, and in 2005 the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker regained life after a long period of neglect. Today it is an active temple, where locals come daily to pray.
