The building of the 'Russian' tavern is a living piece of pre–revolutionary Gomel, imbued with the spirit of the times.
'Russian' Tavern was not just a place where you could taste traditional Russian cuisine. It was a whole complex that combined the functions of a tavern and an inn. On the ground floor there was an inn and rooms for coachmen, and on the second floor there were comfortable rooms for visitors.
Throughout the building's long life, it housed a cadet school and even an NKVD barracks. In 1949, after the end of the Great Patriotic War, the building was thoroughly restored.
Today, the administration of the Central District of Gomel is located within its walls, which underlines its importance for the city.
The building is a striking example of neoclassical architecture. The authorship of the project is often attributed to the famous British architect John Clark, whose influence is felt in the architectural appearance of Gomel during its active development.
The ground floor is decorated with elegant pilasters, giving it austerity and grace. The second floor stands out with pediments above the windows, adding to the building's solemnity.
Originally U-shaped, after reconstruction the building acquired a T-shaped appearance. However, despite the changes, it has retained its historical spirit. The wide arched window above the entrance and the overall symmetry of the elements continue to delight the eye. It is especially valuable that the facade of the first floor has hardly changed since it was built in 1822.
The former 'Russian' Inn is a must–visit destination for anyone interested in history and architecture. You can explore this remarkable building on your own while walking through the city center.
