Golshany. Church of St. George.
The town of Golshany has been known since the 13th century. People of different faiths and nationalities have lived here since ancient times. First of all, we know Golshany thanks to the Sapieha Castle and the majestic Church of St. Peter and St. Paul with a Franciscan monastery. But among the civil buildings, in the very center of the city on Zamkova Street, there is the Orthodox Church of St. George. If you drive along Zamkova Street, pay attention to the old yellow brick buildings built during the Polish era in the 1920s and 1930s. It is here, on this street, not far from the church, that a roadside chapel from the 19th century stands (between the church and the castle).
The church was built in 1901 on the site of an ancient Orthodox wooden church, which by that time had fallen into disrepair and was dismantled.
The church was built in the pseudo-Russian style, which was very popular in the Russian Empire at that time. It was a standard project approved by the Synod. And hundreds and thousands of such churches were built in Russia. But time passed, and there are not many such churches left. And they, of course, now have historical value and the status of an architectural monument.
The church has an elongated axial composition and consists of 4 parts: a vestibule with a bell tower, a refectory, a prayer hall - the main volume and a pentagonal apse. The belfry is two-tiered: an octagon on a trefoil - this means that the octagonal volume of the second tier is located on the quadrangular first tier.
The church is surrounded by a brick wall made of rubble. The church has been restored and is now operational. The Orthodox church can be visited.
