This hydrological reserve was established in 1998 to protect unique forest and swamp ecosystems in their natural state. It is located between the rivers Drut and Olsa and covers an area of 26,600 hectares.
The reserve has the status of a Ramsar site. The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, Especially as Waterfowl Habitat, was adopted on February 2, 1971 in the city of Ramsar, Iran.
The relief is represented by a plain cut by hollows. There are two large swamp areas within the reserve.: Dulebskoe and Velikoe, as well as several lakes, including the Podozerishche and Druchanskoe.
The Dolzhanka and Vederka rivers flow through the territory.
Forests occupy about 76% of the area, swamps – 12%. The main tree species are pine and birch. There are also spruce forests, oak forests, aspen and black alder.
The flora includes 705 plant species, 12 of which are listed in the Red Book, including the turtle skewer and the siberian iris.
The fauna includes 4 species of mammals listed in the Red Book: lynx, hazel dormouse, brown bear and badger. 15 species of birds, 8 species of insects, 1 species of reptiles (copperhead) and 1 species of amphibians (reed toad) are also protected. The avifauna of the reserve is very diverse.
