The fortress house in Gaytyuniški is an architectural structure from the beginning of the 17th century.
The fortified house was built between 1611 and 1612. The owner of the estate was Peter Nonhart, who was known for participating in the construction of royal buildings in Vilnius under King Sigismund III Vasa. A Dutchman by nationality, Peter Nonhart received the town of Gaituniszki as a gift for his good service as the head of royal buildings. In the construction of the fortified house, Nonhart was assisted by his compatriot, engineer Van Doden. The structure was a monumental building with thick walls, two stories high. It was rectangular in shape and had four towers located at the corners and a square tower located in the center. The house was protected by a deep moat and rampart along the circumference. On the territory adjacent to the house there was a well-kept garden, artificial ponds, and a number of outbuildings.
It is known that the famous artist Napoleon Orda, having visited here, was impressed by the unusualness of the house-fortress, and depicted it in his graphic drawing.
The fortress-house in Gaytyuniski has experienced a lot during its history, changing more than one owner over such a long period.
During the Northern War, the Swedes defended themselves from Polish troops in the castle.
From 1946 to 1949 there was a school for machine operators here.
Since 1956, the building has housed the regional psychiatric hospital.
The Nonhart House Fortress is a unique and attractive tourist attraction. However, excursions are not conducted here, as it is a restricted area, and you can only look at the building from the outside. It is also not a fact that you will be able to take a photo. The ancient building from 1611 is in good condition. But it is a great pity that such a beautiful building with historical value is used as a closed psychiatric hospital.
