The Giant from Kozly village: the story of the 230-year-old Oak Yakub near Nesvizh
In pursuit of impressions, we often travel hundreds of kilometers, forgetting that real wonders can grow right next to us. One of these wonders is located just 14 kilometers from the famous Nesvizh Castle. To see it, you do not need to buy a ticket and stand in queues - just turn off the highway towards the village with the unexpected name of Kozly and walk through the pasture.
There, in the middle of an open field, like a guardian of bygone eras, the Oak Yakub spreads its mighty crown. The coordinates of this giant: 53.1609, 26.5262. It is not difficult to find it: from the village of Kozly, you need to walk about 400 meters to the southeast, about the same distance separates the tree from the nearest farm.
When you're next to him for the first time, you're in awe. This is not just a tree - it is a living monument of nature of national importance. Its impressive size is amazing: the height of the oak reaches almost 24 meters, and the trunk circumference is 810 centimeters. To embrace such a giant, it will take a round dance of five or six people.
Scientists estimate Yakub's age at about 230 years. Although there used to be persistent rumors that he didn't care, modern research has turned out to be more modest. However, this does not detract from his greatness. Interestingly, despite its advanced age and weakened crown, the oak continues to grow actively. The secret lies in the "neighbors" - the agricultural fields around them are regularly fertilized, and part of the top dressing goes to the forest giant, allowing it to remain one of the largest in Belarus.
But Yakub is famous not only for its size. As befits an old tree, it is overgrown with legends. The most touching of them says that once upon a time there lived a man in these parts who could not have children for a very long time. He fervently prayed to God for a miracle, and a miracle happened - a son was born, who was named Yakub. In memory of his faith and joy, my father planted a small oak tree. As the years passed, the boy grew up, and with him the green sprout stretched to the sky, turning into a mighty giant.
The oak also has a "high" historical connection. Locals proudly tell the legend that Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte himself stayed under the shade of this oak tree during his march on Moscow in 1812. It is not known for certain whether the legendary commander went this way, but history gives the place a special charm.
Today, the Yakub oak is a popular place for leisurely walks and photo shoots. This is a great option for those who are tired of hiking trails and want to touch something real and eternal. However, it is worth remembering that this is wildlife. There are no paved paths, benches, or souvenir stands. The oak tree stands in the middle of the field, and to approach it, you will have to walk through the grass.
If you are planning a visit, especially after the rain, be sure to wear comfortable waterproof shoes. And do not forget about the careful attitude: the oak is alive, it will have to grow for more than one century. May it continue to please the eye, reminding us of history and inspiring legends.
