Museum
Belarus, Brest region, Ivanovo district, Dostoevo ag., Lenin St. 2
Description
Despite the fact that Fyodor Dostoevsky has never been to Belarus, it is the Belarusian land that is directly related to the origin of the great writer's family. The agro-town of Dostoevo is the cradle of the Dostoevsky family, whose ancestors, who originally bore the surname Irtishch, received the Dostoevsky estate in 1506 and became known as Irtishch-Dostoevsky, and then simply Dostoevsky.
The memory of Dostoevsky's connection with his Belarusian roots is carefully preserved in the literary museum of local lore, opened in a local secondary school in 1982.

Agro-town Dostoevo: the memory of Dostoevsky's connection with Belarusian roots.
The agro-town of Dostoevo in Ivanovo district of the Brest region is the cradle of the Dostoevsky family, whose ancestors, who originally bore the surname Irtishch, received the Dostoevsky estate in 1506 and became known as Irtishch-Dostoevsky, and then simply Dostoevsky. It was a noble family, typical of Polesie.
Unfortunately, the Dostoevsky estate, which they lost back in the 17th century, has not survived to this day, and the writer himself, who was born in Moscow, never visited these places.
However, the memory of Dostoevsky's connection with his Belarusian roots is carefully preserved in the literary museum of local lore, opened in a local secondary school in 1982. The museum has more than three thousand exhibits, among which the central place is occupied by the section "Dostoevo and Dostoevsky". Here are photocopies of documents about the life and work of Fyodor Dostoevsky, editions of his works in different languages, and a family tree of the Dostoevsky family. Of particular value is a lifetime photograph of the writer from 1878, a biography published in 1891, and the novel "Poor People" from 1912.
The museum actively cooperates with the Moscow Dostoevsky Foundation, as well as the Dostoevsky museums in Staraya Russa and St. Petersburg. An important event was a visit to the museum in 2007 by the writer's great-grandson, Dmitry Dostoevsky, who donated valuable exhibits.
In 2021, to mark the 200th anniversary of the writer, the exposition was updated and expanded. It is noteworthy that the museum collects memorabilia and documentary materials about Dostoevsky's life and work from the creative intelligentsia of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, who visit this unique place that connects the great writer with his Belarusian roots.
The village of Dostoevo is located 40 km from Pinsk and retains the atmosphere of Polesie charm, which creates a unique atmosphere for exploring the history of the Dostoevsky family. The F.M. Dostoevsky Museum in Dostoevo is not only a tribute to the memory of the great writer, but also an important cultural center that preserves the connection of times and peoples.
The museum attracts visitors from all over the world. He was awarded Certificates of Honor for his contribution to the popularization of the ideas of cultural heritage protection. In the courtyard of the school, next to the Holy Trinity Church, there is a monument to F.M. Dostoevsky, created by sculptors in 1997.
Next to the remains of the foundation of the former estate of the Dostoevsky family, on a small hill, a memorial sign has been erected today, which designates this historical place. There is also an oak alley, which was opened in 2006 in honor of the 500th anniversary of the Dostoevsky family.
