The Suvorov Oak in Divin: a living witness to history

In a picturesque corner of Belarus, in the Kobrin district of the Brest region, there is not just a centuries-old oak tree, but a real living historical monument. We are talking about the famous Suvorov Oak in the agro-town of Divin, a tree that remembers the steps of the great commander and preserves the memory of events more than two centuries ago.

The history of this place goes back to the end of the XVIII century. On September 3 (Old style), 1794, a battle took place in the Divina area between Russian troops under the command of Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov and Polish rebels under the leadership of General Serakovsky. This battle was part of the campaign to suppress the uprising of Tadeusz Kosciuszko and became an important page in the military career of the invincible generalissimo.

After the successful battle, Suvorov, as a deeply religious man, ordered a thanksgiving prayer service. The service was held in the small village church of Divin. According to local legend, after all the ceremonies, the tired commander decided to relax in the fresh air. He chose a picturesque spot on the edge of the road, where a mighty oak tree grew, and lay down in its shade.

The very oak tree under which Suvorov rested still stands there today.

Today, this tree is not just an attraction, but an officially protected natural site. It has been awarded the status of a botanical natural monument of national significance. Scientists estimate the age of the giant at about 450 years. Imagine that: this tree began its growth long before the birth of Suvorov, survived several wars, changes of states and historical epochs.

The oak's parameters are impressive even now, despite its venerable age. The height of the giant reaches about 31 meters, and the diameter of the massive trunk is one and a half meters. It will take at least two or three people to wrap their arms around it.

Unfortunately, time and the elements do not spare even such giants. The Suvorov oak is slowly drying up. This is due not only to the years, but also to several powerful lightning strikes that hit the crown of the tree. They left their scars and damaged the veteran's vitality. However, despite this, he continues to stand at his post by the road, impressing passers-by with his majesty and harsh beauty.

Coming to Divin, you can not only touch the living history and see a tree that remembers Suvorov, but also enjoy the tranquility of the Belarusian countryside. Standing under the spreading crown, you can't help but think about how fleeting human life is compared to the life of nature, and how valuable it is to preserve such unique places for future generations.
