Derechin. The Catholic Church

The town of Derechin has been known since the 15th century. For a long time there was one of the residences of the Sapieha magnates. At the beginning of the 17th century, the clerk Slonimsky Polubinsky founded a church and a monastery of Dominicans in Derechin. The church had a hospital and a school.

The stone Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1913 and consecrated in October of the same year by Priest Bronislav Sarosk. Since 1928, the sisters of the Holy Family of Mary have been working at the parish. After the war in the 1950s, the church was closed by the Communist authorities. A store has been opened in the building. After the collapse of the USSR, the temple was handed over to believers and restoration was carried out. In 1993, Bishop Alexander Kashkevich of Grodno consecrated the Catholic church. A few years ago, a new renovation was carried out on the roof and in the interior.

The church was built in the Neo-Gothic style. According to the inventory document of 1922, there were the following data: the dimensions of the church are 16 fathoms long, 7 wide, 5 high. the ceiling is wooden. The building is plastered inside. There are six windows in the main tower, three in the presbytery, and all of them are made of colored glass. In the choir there is a harmonium in place of the organ. The bell tower has a bell weighing 60 pounds.

There are three altars in the church: the main one and the side ones. In the main altar there is a Great Icon of the Mother of God of Ostrobram, and on the sides there are icons in a gilded frame of the Heart of Jesus, the icon of the Mother of God of Czestochowa and two icons of the Mother of God and St. Joseph.

The building is built on a stone plinth. The church is surrounded by a stone fence.
