Description

The history of David-Gorodok in the Stolin district begins with the hillfort, or Castle Hill. In the city center, you can park your car on the former Shopping Square and walk along Zamkovaya Street to the archaeological monument in 5 minutes.

During the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 14th-18th century, there were 2 castles: the Upper and the Lower. The castle was wooden with 3 towers. The castle fortifications were about 1 kilometer long. The castle was destroyed more than once during the wars, but it was restored. It finally lost its defensive significance by the middle of the 18th century.

Excavations were carried out on Castle Hill several times by Polish and Soviet archaeologists. Photographs from the excavations of the 1930s during the time of the Polish state have been preserved.

David-Gorodok. Zamkovaya Gora (Castle Hill).

If you visit David-Gorodok, then it is better to park the car in the historical center on the former Shopping Square near the Church of the Kazan Mother of God. Castle Street leads to Castle Hill from the square.

If you come to the castle, or sometimes it is called the hillfort in the sources, you will see that this monastery offers an extraordinarily beautiful panorama of the entire town and the Goryn River. To be more precise, this is not the river itself, but its old channel.

The castle, according to researchers, existed on this site during the period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the period of the 14th - 18th centuries. And the castle was preceded by a settlement of the 11th - 12th centuries.

The castle was wooden with three towers and an earthen rampart. A system of water barriers was created: a moat was dug, which was filled with water and the system was regulated by sluices. There was an upper and a lower lock. The total length of the castle fortifications was about 1 kilometer.

The castle was destroyed during the war in the middle of the 17th century between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Kingdom of Moscow. It was restored at the end of the 17th century. In the 1690s, a wooden Baroque palace and outbuildings were built in the center of the Upper Castle. The palace had a suite of rooms and had about 10 rooms. The castle was severely damaged in the Northern War and finally lost its defensive significance in the middle of the 18th century.

Archaeological excavations were carried out on Castle Hill during the time of the Polish state in the 1930s and during the Soviet era. Castle Hill has the status of an archaeological monument of national significance. There is a protective sign on the monument.
