David–Gorodok. The Church of the Body of God.
In the Stolin district the town of David–Gorodok has a number of ancient monuments. And it will take a tourist a whole day to see them all. Several religious architectural monuments have been preserved in the historical center, including the Catholic Church of the Holy Body.
The church was built on Lermontov Street, which was called Velemitskaya Street during the construction of the temple. The first church in David – Gorodok existed during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which was built in 1623 at the expense of Prince John Albrecht Radziwill.
During the time of the Russian Empire, the church worked, but was destroyed by fire in 1839. A new church was built, which was also wooden, in 1848. The building was destroyed by fire in 1890. Catholic services were held at the priest house (Plebania).
In 1904, a project was developed for a new stone church in the Neo-Gothic style. But the new church was built only during the time of the Polish state in 1936.
The Catholic church was built in the style of historicism. In plan, the building has a rectangular shape, which is covered with a gable roof. A semicircular apse and a small vestibule are attached to the main volume. The lower part of the walls of the church is decorated with horizontal Rustication. The church is single-nave.
After the Great Patriotic War, during the Soviet era, the church was closed and a dance club was built here. The tower on the church was demolished.
In 2017, the building of the former church was returned to the Catholic faithful and repairs were carried out.
