Description

The wooden church was built in 1701 as a Uniate church. Later, when the population of the village increased, the settlers added another part of the church, and the church was rededicated to the Orthodox. Crosses were also replaced – Orthodox crosses were installed instead of Uniate ones.

In the 19th century, a vestibule and a three-tiered bell tower were added to the temple. Major repairs were carried out in 1898.
After the First World War, the parish was closed, and the church was assigned to the Domachevsky parish. As of 1930, the church building was in good condition.

The temple is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Belarus.

St. Michael's Church

St. Michael's Church in the village of Chersk is one of the oldest Orthodox churches in the region. It was built before 1701, which makes it an architectural monument of the XVII–XVIII centuries. The church is made in the Baroque style and is a vivid example of the wooden architecture of the Belarusian Polesie.

The church has a cubic log house, turning into a pentagonal apse with a side sacristy. Initially, the building was covered with a tiled roof with tents on the sides of the apse. Next to the church there is a three-tiered wooden bell tower, characterized by an unusual shape and stylistic unity with the temple. Inside the church, the carved wooden iconostasis of the 1830s has been preserved, as well as icons of the XVII–XIX centuries, such as "Christ the Almighty", "Mother of God Odigitria" and "Archangel Michael".

During the 18th century, the church underwent several reconstructions, including the addition of a vestibule in the 19th century. During the Second World War, the church survived, despite the destruction in the region. In the post-war years, it continued to serve as a spiritual center for local residents. Today, St. Michael's Church is an architectural monument of national significance and is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of Belarus. It continues to operate as an Orthodox church, attracting not only residents of Chersk, but also pilgrims from neighboring villages.

The church unites believers from Chersk and nearby settlements such as Huta, Kobelka, Novosady and others. The main shrine of the temple is the icon "Archangel Michael", as well as other ancient icons that have been preserved since the 17th century. The church is a unique example of wooden architecture, combining elements of the Baroque and traditions of the Belarusian Polesie. Its architecture and interior are an important part of the cultural heritage of Belarus.

St. Michael's Church in Chersk is not only a religious, but also a historical and cultural monument that continues to play an important role in the life of the local community. Its preservation and restoration is an important task for future generations.
