The silent witness of the centuries: the history of the Chemely postal station
In the shade of century-old trees, just a few kilometers from the busy highway R-2 (old Brest road), one of the most atmospheric and forgotten architectural monuments of Brest region is hidden. In the Ivatsevichi district, about 4-8 km northeast of the village of Chemely, there is a lone ruin - a former postal station. Once upon a time, life was in full swing here, the hooves of post horses clattered, and travelers hurried to refresh themselves before a long journey. Today, this place attracts only lovers of abandoned architecture and silence.
The architectural imprint of the era.
The building was erected in the middle of the 19th century, during the period of the active development of postal communication in the Russian Empire. Interestingly, the station was built according to one of the standard designs published in 1843. This project was executed in the spirit of Neo-Gothic, which was quite popular for that time. However, the architecture of Chemely station has its own "highlight": its central part protrudes noticeably forward, which distinguishes this structure from many preserved analogues in Belarus.
This sturdy brick building (a single-story building with high ceilings) has seen many travelers. The route from Europe to the depths of the empire lay through this station, because there was a major hub nearby - Brest-Litovsk, where the Warsaw, Moscow and Kiev highways intersected. The horses changed at the station, the coachmen rested, and urgent dispatches and letters found their recipients.
Oblivion and a new life in ruins.
Time has not spared the station. After the railways replaced horse-drawn transport, and the old highways lost their former importance, the building was abandoned. Today, it is gradually collapsing, slowly sinking into the ground and overgrown with grass. But even in this state, it attracts the eye: the strict lines of the walls, the arched openings of the windows and the traces of former solidity create a surprisingly photogenic and a little sad landscape.
Despite the fact that the station is in disrepair, it remains a magnet for antiquarians, local historians and photographers. It's a silent witness to history that will disappear if you don't pay attention to it.
How do I find this place?
It is quite simple to navigate the terrain. Look for a building along the R-2 highway (Brest — Minsk), towards Ivatsevichi.
· Landmark: from the village of Sosnovy Bor, you need to drive about 4 kilometers towards the regional center.
· Coordinates for the navigator: 52.833907, 25.591550.
The station itself is located on the right side of the road, if you drive from Brest. It's not difficult to see it from the car window, but getting up close can be problematic in wet weather due to dirt roads.
P.S. If you find yourself in these parts, stop for a minute at these walls. Listen to the silence - somewhere in it you can still hear the ringing of a bell and the snorting of tired horses rushing to their shifts in the distant XIX century.
