The Transfiguration Church in Chashniki is a significant monument of religious architecture of the 19th century, in which fragments of frescoes and ancient icons have been preserved.
The history of the temple began in the middle of the 19th century, when its construction was completed thanks to the financial support of Ignatius Volodkovich.
In the 1930s, the church was closed by the Soviet authorities and used as a storage facility.
During the Second World War, services resumed, first for the German occupiers, and then for local residents.
After the liberation of the region, the church continued to function, although worship services were held mostly in secret. In the 1980s, Anatoly Koleda, who had previously studied physics and mathematics, became the rector of the church, and later received a spiritual education and served in Germany, where he founded several Orthodox parishes.
Architecturally, the temple is a brick building covered with plaster and painted in light colors. The western facade is decorated with a four-column Doric portico. The main volume of the building ends with a light drum with a hemispherical dome. Above the entrance stands a bell tower with arched openings and an octagonal tent.
The interior includes frescoes with evangelical subjects, images of the apostles and evangelists. The church houses valuable icons of the XVIII–XIX centuries, including the "Mother of God Odigitria" and "Epiphany". The bell tower is decorated with five ancient bells with the names of the craftsmen.
The temple is a significant monument of religious architecture of the 19th century, in which fragments of frescoes and ancient icons have been preserved.
Despite periods of closure and misuse, since the end of the 20th century, the church has gradually restored its original function and is included in the list of culturally significant sites in the Vitebsk region.
The Transfiguration Church is a popular religious and architectural tourism destination in the Vitebsk region. Visitors can explore the architecture of the mid-19th century, the history of the parish, and preserved shrines such as frescoes and ancient bells.
