The building of the former Choral synagogue (Belarus cinema) in Brest

In the 19th century, Brest-Litovsk was the center of Orthodox Judaism. In 1851, the construction of a new synagogue began in the city. The construction was completed in 1861. The large choral synagogue was built according to a unique design. In the hexagonal building, the side where the entrance was located was narrower than the others. The building also stood out for its high arches, stained glass windows and decorative elements that reflected the rich Jewish culture and traditions. The building served as a place of prayer for the Jewish community of the city.

The Choral Synagogue was an important cultural and religious center, where not only worship services were held, but also various social events.

The synagogue operated for about 100 years.

After the Second World War and the changing demographic situation in Brest, the synagogue lost its original purpose. In Soviet times, it was decided to rebuild it for the Belarus cinema, which is still located here. Since then, the building has become a popular place for watching movies and cultural events.

Today, the Belarus Cinema continues to function, while preserving elements of its historical architecture. The building attracts the attention of both locals and tourists interested in the history and culture of Brest.

The former choral synagogue, now the Belarus Cinema, is an important symbol of Brest's historical memory and cultural heritage, reflecting the multi-layered history of the city and its inhabitants.
