Description

The Holy Resurrection Cathedral is an Orthodox church in Brest, built in 1995 in honor of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The cathedral was consecrated in 1998 by Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia, after which regular divine services began in it. In 2001, a 400-kilogram bell was installed in the cathedral. Built in the neo-Russian architectural style, the cathedral can simultaneously accommodate up to five thousand parishioners. The area of the upper (Resurrection) temple is more than 700 square meters, and the lower (Kazan) one is 550 square meters. The five huge domes of this shrine symbolize Jesus Christ and the four evangelical apostles. The height of the central dome is 41 meters, and the bell tower located next to the temple is 47.5 meters, which approximately corresponds to the height of a 15—storey building.

Holy Resurrection Cathedral

Mitrophoric Archpriest Yevgeny Parfenyuk (1921-2008) became the builder and the first rector of the Resurrection Cathedral. In 1992, as dean of the churches of the Brest region and rector of the Simeon Cathedral, Father Eugene began the construction of the Resurrection Cathedral. At that time, he was already 70 years old.

The lower church of the Resurrection Cathedral is dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, the upper church is dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ.

On July 26, 1992, the solemn consecration of the foundation of the Resurrection Church took place.

In 1995, during his second apostolic journey to White Russia, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy arrived at the cathedral under construction, accompanied by the head of state. The Primate of the Church prayed in the Kazan Temple, blessed the construction and donated an expensive embossed vestment to the Kazan throne. He also expressed his intention to attend the consecration of the cathedral after its completion.

On June 24, 2001, His Holiness the Patriarch completed the rite of consecration of the upper Resurrection Church and conducted the Divine Liturgy there. After the service, Patriarch Alexy II presented the cathedral with Eucharistic vessels, and Father Eugene received the Order of St. Sergius of Radonezh from the hands of the Primate of the Church.

On March 10, 2008, on the first day of Lent, Father Yevgeny Parfenyuk died at the age of 86.

On June 4, 2008, Mitrophoric Archpriest Vladimir Kornelyuk was appointed rector of the Resurrection Cathedral, under whom the construction and beautification of the temple continued. During his abbacy, the church was transformed both externally and internally: a complete renovation was carried out, heating was installed in the upper Resurrection Church; painting of the interior space began, the cathedral shone with gold candlesticks and lecterns.

In 2012, the implementation of the Temple of My Soul project began — a joint action of the Resurrection Cathedral and the administration of the Moskovsky district. As part of the project, a complete reconstruction of the domes of the temple is planned — the production of gold bulbs from titanium nitride and the central part of the domes made of stainless steel with gold edging, as well as the renovation of the bell tower. The rector of the cathedral, Archpriest Vladimir Kornelyuk, is the dean of the churches of the Brest regional district.

The upper church houses the relics of the Great Martyr Panteleimon the Healer and the righteous John of Kormyansk.
