Brest. St. Athanasius Monastery
At the turn of the XIX–XX centuries, a chapel was erected at the place of the death of the Holy Martyr Athanasius. Divine services were held in this chapel during the celebration of the memory of the saint, which emphasized its spiritual significance. In the 1960s, the chapel was closed, but years later, in 1989, it was restored. It is important to note that the documented date of consecration of the chapel-church by the episcopal rank is May 3, 1909.
In July 1995, during a visit to the Brest diocese, Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia arrived here and blessed the foundation of a monastery on this historic site. The decision to establish a monastery in the name of St. Athanasius was adopted by the Synod of the Belarusian Exarchate on February 3, 1996 and approved by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on February 21 of the same year. Under the first viceroy, there was a significant expansion of the chapel building: a refectory and several cells were added to the church house, which significantly improved the infrastructure of the monastery. Subsequently, work began on the monastery building, which includes the gatehouse church and the bishop's chambers.
Processions are held annually to the walls of the Athanasius Monastery, which are held twice a year: on the third Sunday after the feast of Pentecost, celebrated as the Day of the Belarusian Saints, and on September 18, the day of the martyrdom of St. Athanasius of Brest. These processions attract many pilgrims and believers, creating a special atmosphere of spiritual unity and reverence for the memory of the saint.
