Ruins of the White Palace in the Brest Fortress

The construction of the first building of the Basilian Monastery in Brest began in 1629, and the wooden church of St. Peter and St. Paul was completed in 1631. Starting in 1770, the Basilians decided to build a new stone church in the Baroque style of Vilna on the site of the old wooden church, but its towers remained unfinished.

In 1835, during the construction of the Brest Fortress, this building turned out to be one of the few surviving buildings in old Brest. Later it was rebuilt as an officer's casino.

During the First World War, peace negotiations took place in the Brest Fortress between representatives of Soviet Russia and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, Bulgaria), which ended with the signing of the Brest Peace on March 3, 1918 in the "White Palace", as the building became known.

During the Second World War, the palace was seriously damaged. During the defense of the fortress in 1939, it was damaged by a German airstrike, and the most significant damage was inflicted in June-July 1941. In the post-war period, the remains of more than 130 people were found under the rubble of the building and near it. In the basement, the inscription "We do not die in shame" was found on one of the bricks.

In the early 1950s, the building was dismantled into bricks.

Nowadays, only its foundations and parts of the exterior walls, located opposite the entrance to the Museum of the Defense of the Brest Fortress, have been preserved. The remains of the palace have been preserved, and a memorial plaque has been installed on them.

Today, the ruins of the White Palace are part of the Brest Fortress Memorial Complex, which attracts tourists and researchers. They serve as a reminder of the heroism of the defenders of the fortress and the importance of historical memory. This place attracts the attention of both locals and tourists who want to learn more about the rich history of Belarus.
