Description
Fort V is a unique Russian fortification building dating back to the end of the XIX – beginning of the XX centuries. This monument is located in the southwestern part of the city of Brest, at 99 Starodorozhnaya Street.
The fort was built in 1879-1880 as one of the advanced fortifications of the Brest fortress. During the modernization process carried out in 1886-1889 and 1906-1913, the fort was significantly strengthened and became part of the second (inner) fort line of the Brest-Litovsk fortress.
In 1995, the fort was included in the list of historical and cultural values of the Republic of Belarus. Since May 31, 1999, it has been a branch of the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex.

Brest. Fort V.
The fifth Fort occupies an area of almost a hectare and, if viewed from above, is a pentagonal structure. Its construction was carried out in the period from 1878 to 1888, using the same red brick as for the Brest fortress. However, to date, the original brick can only be seen in the former barracks, which have now been turned into museum exhibition halls. Everything else is hidden under a two-meter layer of concrete, which was the result of modernization at the beginning of the 20th century, when the range and power of artillery guns increased significantly.
The Fifth Fort was not the only such structure in the Brest-Litovsk Fortress complex. Eight more forts were located along the citadel at a distance of 3-4 kilometers. The best preserved of them is the fort in Gershon. Artillery cannons from the Great Patriotic War, produced in 1937-1944, as well as the BTR-60 armored personnel carrier, released in the 1960s, are on display in front of him today. Inside the fort there is a photo exhibition called "The Western Outpost of the Fatherland", which is dedicated to the history of the construction of the forts of the Brest-Litovsk fortress.
The main exposition of the museum is located in six halls located in the premises of the gorzhev barracks. Hall No. 1, "The History of fortification", introduces guests to the stages of development of fortifications through the prism of the architectural traditions of the area. In Hall No. 2, "Brest Fortress — witness of the Times", you can learn in detail the history of the Brest-Litovsk fortress and its role in the defensive system of the state. The third hall, "The Defensive line of the Brest Fortress", is dedicated to the events of the First World War that unfolded on the territory of the fort.
In Hall No. 4, the "Casemate of the lower ranks", the atmosphere of the dwelling of soldiers of the pre-revolutionary period has been recreated. Hall No. 5, "Chancery and General Store", demonstrates warehouse and administrative premises of the beginning of the XX century. Hall No. 6 is dedicated to the washbasins of that period.
