Boruny. Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
The church and monastery in Boruny is a unique architectural monument for Belarus, which looks more like a cake that you want to eat than a building... It is so huge and immense. It should be examined from all sides and the entire complex should be walked around the perimeter.
In the late 16th – early 17th century, the first wooden church was built in Boruny. And in the late 17th century, the construction of the Uniate Church in honor of the Virgin Mary began, and a monastery was founded. Since 1700, a Basilian school was founded here, and the 19th century was the heyday of this school. The Basilian Order is a Uniate order, the greatest influence of which fell on the 17th - early 19th centuries in Belarus. Graduates of the school in Boruny were famous figures and writers, friends of Adam Mickiewicz - Ignat Khodka (1794 - 1861) and Anton Edward Odinets (1804 - 1885).
The church and monastery, wooden buildings, burned down during the Northern War. The new architectural complex was built in the mid-18th century in the style of the late Belarusian Vilnius Baroque according to the design of the famous architect Alexander Osikevich. The interior of the church was decorated by the best masters of Minsk and Vilnius until 1770. Since 1833, the two-story brick building of the monastery was transferred to the Orthodox theological school and rebuilt in the classical style. And the church was also given to the Orthodox and consecrated the church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God.
During the Polish era, in the 1920s, a Belarusian teacher's seminary operated in the former Uniate monastery, the director of which was the famous figure and educator Simon Rak-Mikhailovsky (1885 - 1938). And the Orthodox church was returned to the Catholics and re-consecrated in honor of the apostles Peter and Paul.
If you are going to inspect the church, first move away from the monument by 50 meters and inspect its facade. On the left you will see a small building - this is a chapel, in which in the 19th century seminarians hid their flag. The facade of the church is wavy - one of the signs of Vilnius Baroque. On the left and right - telescopic multi-tiered towers. On the right is a bell tower.
The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is a three-aisled basilica. There are 7 different altars inside. The central altar contains the miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Boruny. If you walk around the architectural complex, on the left side, on the building of the former monastery-seminar, you will see a memorial sign telling about famous teachers and graduates of the school. Behind the monastery on the right you will see a reinforced concrete structure - this is a German pillbox from the First World War. On the road from Golshany to Boruny, 500 meters from the church, on the left side you will see a memorial sign in honor of the crew of the Russian bomber "Ilya Muromets". The crew of the plane died in 1916 and is buried in the local cemetery.
