Borki. Memorial complex "In memory of the burned villages".
Memorial
Belarus, Mogilev region, Kirovsky district, Borki village.
Description
In the Kirov district of the Mogilev region, there is the village of Borki, where the memorial complex "In Memory of the burned villages of the Mogilev region" is located. The scale of the tragedy that happened here is difficult to describe in words: 1,800 residents of six surrounding villages were burned and killed by the Nazis in the summer of 1942.
Currently, only people live in the village of Borki, the village has been restored from the ashes. The rest of the settlements ceased to exist and remained only in our memory, as evidence of that terrible war.
The first monument appeared in Borki back in 1964 at the local cemetery.
In the 2000s, a chapel was built and a pedestal was erected in memory of the burned villages of the Mogilev region, where 112 destroyed places are indicated. The pedestal wall is encircled by a construction with bells. On June 20, 2020, the memorial complex was opened, and in 2004, a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God icon appeared.

Memorial complex "In memory of the burned villages of Mogilev region".
The memorial complex is an open area with structures that immerse the people here in that terrible and tragic time. We are becoming participants in the terrible events that happened to our fellow countrymen many years ago.
The central image of the memorial is the figure of a grieving mother, frozen by an empty cradle. The ruins of the roof tower over her sculpture. In the evening, everything is illuminated by spotlights and tragic music can be heard: the creaking of the cradle and the lullaby of a mother mad with grief. There are no more houses left on the street, only parts of the charred walls of the houses that once stood here. The things left behind - a jug, curtains symbolize the suddenly interrupted life of a huge number of people who died at the hands of animals and murderers. In the destroyed barn there is a composition resembling fire and smoke, in which there are living people.
The horror of the tragedy is felt everywhere. There is also musical accompaniment - children shout the words "fascists", moans and the sound of flames can be heard. Posters with memories of surviving children and adults are displayed nearby. There are only two left... 23 people. On the log cabins of the houses we see the image of the Mother of God above. At the bottom, after descending, we see a model of the well. The Black Well is a place of mourning and memory of children who were thrown alive into deep and icy water. The ripples on the water are the traces of their tears, frozen forever. People who come here leave toys, flowers, and sweets at the well for children who have never seen anything in their lives. Nearby there are large pieces of marble with messages from the residents of the village of Borki to us living in peacetime. There are paths with benches around the memorial, and saplings are growing.
Soon there will be a large memorial alley here.
The place of the tragedy... creepy and scary. Everything is in dark colors, there is horror in the air and it feels as if there is a burning smell all around.
It is difficult to be in this tragic place without tears, but you need to come and visit these "fiery villages" even if only in order to value your own life and the lives of other people more.
