Description

Shopping malls in Borisov appeared in 1908. Of the four buildings in the neoclassical style, only one has survived to this day. It is located in the center of Staro-Borisov.

The building with arched windows and strict rhythm of columns is a rare monument of merchant architecture of the early 20th century. The uniqueness lies in the fact that it has been used for its intended purpose for more than a hundred years: shops still operate here. A living history in the very center of the city.

Shopping malls in Borisov as a monument of the merchant era

In the history of small Belarusian towns at the beginning of the 20th century, a special place is occupied by the "red" or shopping malls - typical but majestic buildings that symbolized economic growth and stability. Borisov was no exception. In 1908, four buildings appeared here, on the Staro-Borisov shopping square (the historical center), forming a single architectural ensemble. Designed in the spirit of neoclassicism, they were supposed to emphasize the solidity of the local merchants and give the urban center a European, respectable look.

Unfortunately, time and historical disasters (in particular, two world wars and fires) did not spare this complex. To this day, only one of the four buildings has survived. However, it continues to fulfill its original function, remaining not just an architectural monument, but an active part of the urban infrastructure.

Architectural appearance.

The preserved building is located in the center of Staro-Borisov at coordinates 54.2462, 28.5046. It is a one-story (sometimes with semi-basement rooms) rectangular structure, typical of commercial architecture of the beginning of the last century.

Neoclassicism can be read here in the strict symmetry of the facade and the calm rhythm of the columns. The building is divided into several sections-shops, each of which has a separate entrance. The rhythmic series of arched window openings and doorways creates a recognizable gallery structure. Although the building is devoid of magnificent decor, its main decoration is the plastic facade, created by alternating protruding and sinking parts, as well as strict cornices and inter-window draughts.

Despite its considerable age (over 110 years), the building is in relatively good condition and has retained its historical scale, harmoniously fitting into the low-rise buildings of the old city district.

A living history.

The uniqueness of this monument is that it has not turned into a museum exhibit. Just like a century ago, trade is booming within its walls. There are shops and commercial outlets here. For residents of the surrounding streets, these are just "shops in the old rows", for local historians it is a mute witness to the vibrant commercial life that was conducted here under Emperor Nicholas II.

The shopping malls in Borisov are a rare example of pre-revolutionary commercial architecture in Belarus, which has come down to us in an authentic functional quality. They are an important city-forming dominant of Staro-Borisov and a reminder of the time when the city was a major merchant center on a busy highway.
