Bolshaya Berestovitsa. Blessed Virgin Mary Visitation church
In the center of the small village of Bolshaya Berestovitsa stands a huge building of the stone church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church was built in the early 17th century, around 1615.
The founder of the temple was magnate Jerome Khodkevich, equerry of the great Lithuanian, voivode of Mstislavsky. The place belonged to the Khodkeviches, and here was one of their residences. The Khodkevichi were the founders of many Christian shrines.
An urn with the heart of the outstanding Belarusian commander John Karol Khodkevich (1560-1621), who was Hetman the Great of Lithuania, Voivode of Vilna, and had the title of count "on Shklov, Myshe and Bykhov", was buried in this church in Bolshaya Berestovitsa.
The church most likely belonged to the Catholic Carmelite Order. In 1741, the church was renovated with a donation from the Krakow castellan Jozef Mniszek. At that time, the church had a school and a hospital.
After the anti-Russian uprising in the 19th century, the Catholic church was handed over to Orthodox believers. In Polish times it was a church again. In Soviet times, the church was closed after the war and was adapted for household needs.
The church is three-nave, crazy. Choirs are made at the entrance. A crypt with burials was made under the church. The church is now in a neglected state and in need of repair.
