Babruysk. Synagogue.
The first synagogue in Bobruisk is mentioned in written sources in the 18th century. And during the times of the Russian Empire, when the number of Jewish population in the city increased dramatically, Bobruisk became one of the largest centers of Jewish culture. In 1939, Jews in Bobruisk made up 30% of the population. During the war, 25,000 Jews died, i.e. 80% of the pre-war number. The synagogue on Sotsyalistichna Street, the former Muravyovskaya Street, was the main synagogue in Babruysk before the revolution and was built in 1901. After the revolution, the temple was closed and in 1927 a warehouse was built. During the war, the building burned down, and after the war, those Jews who returned from the evacuation asked them to give them the synagogue, which they would repair with their own money. The authorities agreed and the Jews repaired the temple. Then the synagogue was taken away again and turned into a social facility. And only in the early 1990s, the synagogue was returned to the faithful. Since 2002, a rabbi from Israel has been working in the synagogue.
