The Church of St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa in Bershty is a monument of Belarusian folk architecture.
The Church of St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa in Bershty is a historical and cultural monument located in the center of the village of Bershty. It was built in 1816 from wood and is an example of folk architecture due to its laconic appearance, almost devoid of decorative elements.
In 1861, a wooden bell tower was added to the church, and in 1867, with the permission of the diocesan authorities, the peasants of the village built a cemetery church on a stone foundation using materials from the old church. In 1876, a new wooden vestibule was added.
In 1866, parishioners raised funds for the purchase of the icon "Saint Alexander Nevsky" in memory of the rescue of Emperor Alexander II from an attempt on his life, collecting 10 kopecks from each owner.
The church underwent major repairs in 1931, but in 1961, during the Khrushchev persecution, it was closed. As a result of the closure, documentation, utensils and part of the icons were lost, but other icons were saved by parishioners and returned to the temple after its opening.
From the moment of its closure until 1990, a warehouse was located in the temple building.
In 1990, it became possible to petition for the opening of the church, and soon it was consecrated, which marked the beginning of the revival of parish life. St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Church continues to be an important spiritual center for local residents.
