The Forgotten Art Nouveau: the manager's estate in Berdovka
In the Lida district, among the green fields and neat village houses of the agricultural town of Berdovka, a real architectural gem of the 1930s is hidden. Locals are used to it, and visitors often stop in perplexity: where does this two-story brick mansion come from here, far from the capital's avenues?
The mansion was built in the days when Western Belarus was part of the Polish Republic (1920-1930s). But the history of this place began much earlier and is closely connected with the Dembovetsky family. The remains of an ancient manor park have been preserved next to the house - it was here, in the shade of century-old trees, that the most romantic and mysterious atmosphere that surrounds the building today originated.
In the 1930s, the estate was apparently reorganized, and this house was built for the manager or director of the stud farm. Horses were the local pride: horse breeding in these parts has always been held in high esteem.
Architectural appearance: the modest elegance of modernity.
Despite the utilitarian name ("director's house"), the building looks like a real gentry manor in the Art Nouveau style. The two-storey brick mansion with a high hip roof impresses with the purity of lines and the nobility of forms. Architects of that time were able to combine functionality and beauty:
1. Facades: Red brick perfectly harmonizes with the preserved decorative elements. Pay attention to the elegant window frames, figured masonry and attics, which give the building a sophisticated and even slightly European look.
2. Layout: The building has a clear symmetrical structure with a central entrance. The front part was most likely facing the park so that the director and his guests could enjoy the view of the greenery.
3. Historical context: This is not just a "house", it is a witness to the complex history of Lida lands, which absorbed the Polish, Soviet and Belarusian eras.
What's in there now?
The building was not destroyed after the war. It continued to be used, either as an apartment building or for the needs of a state farm (the stud farm in Berdovka continued to operate for many years). Today, the mansion is in a semi-abandoned state, but it has not been destroyed. You can approach it, examine the brickwork, feel the spirit of the old manor and stroll through the remains of Dembovetsky park.
This place is ideal for those who like to explore little-known corners of Belarus, look for beauty in unusual locations and imagine how people lived almost 100 years ago.
How to find it?
The house is located on the southern outskirts of Berdovka. Move along Parkovaya Street, you will not miss it: the red brick "teremok" among the trees is visible from afar.
