Belitsa. Chapel of Our Lady of Ruzhentsova.
In the town of Belitsa, Lida district, there is a chapel of the Mother of God Ruzhentsova at the local Catholic cemetery.
The place was first mentioned in written sources in the 15th century during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the period of King Kazimir Jagiellonchik.
Belitsa was the center of the Grand Duchy volost. In 1431-1500, the first wooden Catholic church was built.
In 1557, the documents of the town mentioned the property of the Radziwill magnates. Belitskaya volost was presented to Prince Nikolai Radziwill the Red by King and Grand Duke Sigismund August of Lithuania. According to the documents of 1784, a Catholic church was operating in Belica.
The place belonged to the Radziwill princes until 1832, and after Sofia Radziwill's death it passed to her husband Count Wittgenstein. At that time, the Dominican monastery in the village was closed, and in 1838 the church, which was attached to the monastery, was closed. In 1839, a parish was established and the Church of the Holy Spirit was opened. There was also the estate of Princess Trubetskaya at the end of the 19th century.
The wooden chapel of the Mother of God Ruzhentsova was erected in the Catholic cemetery in 1824. The church was built by the Dominican Catholic Order. The chapel was used as a church in those days of the Russian Empire, when the local church of St. George was taken over by the Orthodox church.
The chapel consists of a prayer hall and an apse. The main altar in the church with the icon of the Mother of God Ruzhentsova has two compositions: on the left there is an icon in a silver frame and a sculpture of the Mother of God. And on the right is an image of the Mother of God of Ostrobram and a sculpture of Jesus Christ. An icon from the old church of St. George has also been preserved.
