The Albertine Boulder: the Scandinavian guardian of Slonim with a 200-thousand-year history

If you are traveling in the Grodno region and love places where nature meets history and legends, you should definitely turn off the highway towards Slonim. There, among the picturesque landscapes of the Republican Biological Reserve "Slonimsky", a real giant is hidden - the Albertine boulder.

This stone is not just a large piece of rock. It is a geological natural monument, officially protected by the state, and the largest glacial boulder in the entire Slonim district. Its power and size are fascinating: imagine a block three meters high, rooted deep into our earth. The exact parameters of the giant are as follows: length - 3 meters, width - 2.5 meters, and height - as much as 3.5 meters!

A traveler from the past.

Scientists have estimated that this monumental stone has been adorning the Belarusian expanses for about 150-220 thousand years. It was brought here by the powerful Sozh glacier, which, like a giant bulldozer, dragged fragments of rocks from distant Scandinavia. It turns out that this boulder is a real Viking among the stones: it was born in Fennoscandinavia, and "registered" with us. Today, he is a valuable witness to the ancient history of the Earth, according to which geologists study the movement of glaciers and the composition of rocks of the Baltic Shield.

The legend of landowner Puslovsky and the divine protection.

However, it is not only the scientific value that attracts tourists and pilgrims to the Albertine Boulder. There is an amazing legend among the people that is passed down from mouth to mouth. It is associated with the famous noble family of the Puslovskys, who owned these lands in the 19th century.

It is said that the head of the family (according to some versions, his son) was caught in a field by a terrible thunderstorm. The sky turned black, and lightning flashed one after another. There was nowhere to hide, and death seemed imminent. In desperation, Puslovsky spurred his horse and rushed to a huge stone, hoping to hide behind it from the raging elements. And at the very moment when he dismounted and pressed himself against the cold granite wall, a terrible lightning strike landed right on top of the boulder. The stone took the full impact, splitting, but saved a man's life.

Since then, the belief in the miraculous power of the Albertine boulder has been strengthened among the people. Locals and visitors began to consider it not just a stone, but a real symbol of protection and salvation. It is rumored that if you touch its rough surface in a thunderstorm or in a difficult moment of life, it will avert trouble and give you confidence.

Come to touch the history, count 220 thousand years on its mossy sides and feel the very energy of protection, which is legendary.
