Zhitkovichi district: Turov-Lenin.

Description

Our tour begins in Turov, one of the oldest cities in Belarus and the capital of the former Turov Principality in the 10th–13th centuries. The city was first mentioned in 980 in 'The Tale of Bygone Years'.

In the 11th century, the city became one of the centers of Christianity, at the same time the "Turov Gospel" was created here — the oldest book created on the territory of modern Belarus.

Here you will see the main historical and cultural values and attractions.:

- miraculously growing stone crosses, revered by people for centuries;

- the Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Lawrence, named after the most famous natives of this city;

- the only monument in the world to sandpipers, rare Red Book birds nesting in the surrounding area;

- the historical and archaeological complex "Ancient Turov" with the remains of the foundation of an ancient temple, which was the largest monumental structure on the territory of the western lands of Ancient Russia;

- the Church of All Saints, the main attraction of which is a two-meter stone cross of the 10th century, which, according to legend, sailed against the current to Turov from Kiev in the year of the Baptism of Rus by Prince Vladimir.

Then we move to the Lenin village, which dates back to the first half of the 16th century.

The history of Lenin village is closely connected with Jews: before the Nazi occupation, about a thousand Jews lived here, there was a Jewish school and there were two synagogues. Now the only reminder of the local Jewish roots is the cemetery, founded in the 16th century. Of particular value are the unique Jewish wooden monuments, which have been preserved here in the amount of 30 pieces, and their age can reach 200 years.

There is also an Orthodox cemetery in Lenin, which houses the Holy Cross Chapel in 1871, built in honor of the abolition of serfdom.

All this and much more awaits you to meet interested and inquisitive tourists!
