Architectural pearls of Belarus: Zhilichi-Krasny Bereg.
Description
On this route, we will visit the estate in Zhilichi, which once belonged to the Bulgakov family. The estate is often referred to as the "Belarusian Versailles" and is a classic 19th-century palace and park ensemble. It is one of the largest estates in the country and the best preserved palace complex, which is a real architectural treasure in eastern Belarus. The exterior and interior of the palace were recreated thanks to photographs from the 1910s, old notes and sketches, as well as archival documents. Today, the interiors are decorated with antique furniture purchased or provided by collectors for temporary display. In addition, valuable paintings and prints from the collections of the National Art Museum of Belarus can be seen in Zhilichi.
Next, we head to the village of Krasny Bereg, where a wonderful fairy-tale palace stands, built in a combination of neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance styles. Drainpipes in the form of gargoyles surprise, and high-reliefs and openwork lattices in an exquisite combination of red and white colors only enhance the impression. The interior of the palace is also unique: thirty-six rooms, each of which is decorated in its own style. This will allow us to take an exciting journey through the history of interior design. The park area around the palace is not only of architectural value, but also an outstanding example of landscape art in the English style. In addition to the common types of trees, there are unique specimens growing here, which are very informative to see.
Later, there is an opportunity to visit the memorial complex "Krasny Bereg", located nearby. This place was home to one of the largest children's donor camps, where children aged 8 to 14 were forcibly taken from their mothers from various districts. Many failed to survive... a memorial with a message for all generations. Don't drive by!
